Position Description: The Resident Life Counselor of the Virginia Governor’s School for Visual & Performing Arts and the Humanities supervises 15-20 rising high school juniors and seniors in all daily programs and activities, facilitates extracurricular and service-learning activities, and performs other duties as needed for the summer residential program.
We seek self-motivated, energetic applicants who enjoy working with teens. Counselors must be able to work cooperatively with others and have a valid driver's license. The work of a Counselor can be physically and mentally demanding, so a high-functioning level of physical fitness and mental health is essential for this position. Applicants must be 21 by June 21, 2026.
The Governor’s School operates for three weeks in the summer (June 21–July 11, 2026). Twenty-one
(21) positions are open in this search. Just before the summer program, the Resident Life Counselors will undergo a weeklong residential training program for Resident Life Counselors from June 14–21, 2026. The incumbents will manage the day-to-day activities of 15-20 students under their direct supervision and the co-curricular activities of 300-350 Governor’s School students.
The Resident Life Counselors will work closely with the Resident Life Managers, directors, and program coordinators to integrate co-curricular activities with the academic programs. They will organize co-curricular activities for the enrichment and education of the students, and respond to incidents and problems, especially after office hours and on weekends.
The Resident Life Counselors will be paid a stipend (in installments) ranging from $2,500 to $3,000 for the assignment depending on qualification and relevant experience. Full board and lodging will be provided to Counselors during the weeklong training and three-week summer program. They will report to the Resident Life Managers.
