Matt Rhoten, MM
Saxophonist, Educator, and Performer
Matt Rhoten is a saxophonist, educator, and performer with a growing reputation in the music world. He graduated from Radford University in 2022, and soon after, he earned his Master’s degree in saxophone performance from The University of Tennessee in 2024.
During his time at Radford University, Matt stood out not only for his talent as a musician but also for his dedication to music education. He was recognized with the Most Outstanding Music Education Award and the Most Outstanding Graduate Award. In 2021, he won the Radford University 6th Annual Concerto Competition, showcasing his skill and musicality.
At the University of Tennessee, Matt was the Saxophone Graduate Teaching Assistant and taught undergraduate courses relating to saxophone pedagogy and repertoire. He was honored with the Gerald W. Barnes Award for Excellence in the woodwind department, which recognized his outstanding contributions as a graduate student.
Outside of performing, Matt is passionate about teaching. He’s currently the Saxophone and Clarinet Professor at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, where he works with students to develop their woodwind skills. He also teaches at Emory & Henry University as the Woodwind Professor for the Department of Music.
In addition to his teaching roles, Matt has spent the past five years working with Radford University’s Governor’s School as a counselor and as one of two Resident-Life Managers. In this role, he worked closely with his co-RM, Rachel Sharrett, to manage the counseling team and organize training activities for them before the students arrive. To prepare for the students' arrival on campus, Matt helps organize a variety of activities during the summer, including Opening Ceremonies, Fourth of July celebrations, dances, and the popular Movie on the Lawn event. This experience allowed Matt to connect with students beyond the classroom, making a lasting impact on their overall experience at the program.
