About Radford University

Nestled in the New River Valley of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, Radford University is a student-centered institution serving more than 7,000 students. Radford University at Carilion, located in downtown Roanoke’s Innovation Corridor, provides rigorous undergraduate and graduate programs in the health sciences. The faculty are practicing clinicians who teach students to care for patients, conduct research, and explore how to manage organizations in a clinical setting on the campus of Carilion Medical Center.

McConnell Library

McConnell Library on the main campus will be open weekdays during the summer. Governor’s School students are welcome to use the physical library under the supervision of a Governor’s School counselor and access our online resources and services anytime during the program.

DVDs must be returned within 1 week. Books have a 3-week loan period. Regardless of the loan period, all materials must be returned before you leave campus at the end of Governor's School. You will be charged replacement costs for any items that are not returned or are damaged.

Printing is also located in the library: IT will load $5 of printing funds onto your balance, and you can use this by logging into any public PC in the library. 

Recreational Facilities and Activities

University recreational facilities, including the Student Recreation and Wellness Center (SRWC), may be available to Governor’s School students during scheduled group activities on weekdays with a counselor present.

In accordance with SRWC policies:

• Recreational facility use must occur as part of approved Governor’s School activities.
• Students may use designated cardiovascular and exercise equipment.
• Students may use free weights only if the “free-weight waiver” is signed in CampDocs.com.

Students are encouraged to bring recreational equipment and appropriate clothing, including athletic shoes, yoga mats, footballs, soccer balls, and frisbees.

Weekend activities may include hiking, swimming, or river and lake outings. Students should bring swimwear, comfortable walking shoes, and shoes suitable for water activities.

Laundry Facilities

All residence halls have shared laundry facilities equipped with washers, dryers, and laundry sinks. Students are responsible for washing their own clothing and promptly removing items from machines so that others may use them.

Students should bring laundry detergent and download the CSC Go app to pay for laundry. Irons and ironing boards are not provided.

Laundry Costs:

• Washing: $1.75 per load
• Drying: $1.50 per load

Computers, Internet and Email Access

Radford University provides wireless internet access and computer labs for educational use. Computers are available in McConnell Library and select campus computer labs. Students are also welcome to bring personal laptops or tablets.

Students will receive a Radford University login account and email address for use during Governor's School. Students are expected to activate their accounts before arriving on campus, following instructions provided in advance. A university technology representative will be available during check-in to assist with questions or technical difficulties.

Students must use university technology responsibly and comply with all applicable Radford University policies regarding computer and internet use. Students may also access their existing personal email accounts during the program.

Governor’s School is committed to maintaining a safe, supportive, and cohesive residential learning environment. All students must comply with Governor’s School and Radford University policies, as well as instructions from authorized university and program personnel.

Student Identification/Access Cards and Room Keys

Each student will be issued a Governor’s School identification badge, an access card, and a residence hall room key. The access card is required for entry into the residence hall and dining facilities.

Students must wear both their identification badge and access card on the provided red lanyard at all times when outside their residence hall rooms and keep their room keys with them at all times.

In the event of a lost room key, the student will be charged a $125 fee to cover the cost of labor and lock re-coring.

Visitors and Campus Boundaries

To maintain a secure and self-contained residential environment, outside visitors, including family members and friends, are not permitted during Governor’s School.

This restriction includes instructional activities, co-curricular activities, Works in Progress recitals and concerts and final showcases.

Campus boundaries will be explained during orientation. Students may not leave the designated campus area unless accompanied by an authorized Governor’s School employee.

Off-Campus Activities

Students participating in approved off-campus activities must:

• Wear their Governor’s School identification/access card.
• Remain with their assigned groups and residential life counselors.
• Follow all instructions from Governor’s School personnel.

Students may not separate from their assigned groups or leave an activity without authorization.

Evening Residence Hall Restrictions

After 9:30 p.m., students may not leave their residence halls without a Governor’s School counselor.

Fire Drills and Emergency Evacuations

When a fire alarm sounds, students must immediately and calmly evacuate the building using the designated exits.

After exiting, students must report to their assigned gathering locations with their residential life counselor group or class. Attendance will be taken, and further instructions will be provided.

Students must follow all directions from Governor’s School personnel, university officials, and emergency responders during drills and emergencies.

Student Searches

To maintain a safe and disciplined learning environment, Governor’s School personnel may search a student’s person and/or personal belongings when there is reasonable suspicion that the student possesses illegal or unauthorized materials, including tobacco, alcohol, weapons, nonprescription drugs, or materials containing illicit content.

All searches will be conducted in accordance with Virginia Department of Education guidelines and standards.

If illegal items are discovered, the incident will be reported to the Radford University Police Department and may result in criminal charges.

Reporting Illness or Injury

Students must immediately report any illness or injury, regardless of severity, to their residential life counselor.

When medical evaluation or treatment is necessary, a Governor’s School staff member will arrange an appointment and escort the student to the Student Health Center. Appointments are required.

The Student Health Center is open Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.–1 p.m., during the summer and is closed on Fridays.

Medical Emergencies

In the event of a suspected life-threatening illness or injury, students should contact Radford University Police at 540-831-5500 and notify their residential life counselor immediately.

When emergency transportation is necessary, a local rescue squad will transport the student to New River Valley Medical Center, approximately seven minutes from campus.

Student Health Center Fees

The Student Health Center accepts participating health insurance plans. Students are responsible for any applicable copayments at the time of treatment. Uninsured students or those whose insurance does not participate with Carilion Clinic will be charged a $55 office visit fee, with additional charges for certain services and treatments. Students should be prepared to pay any applicable fees at the time of treatment.

Medications

Governor’s School personnel do not provide or administer over-the-counter medications.

Students who may need nonprescription medications should bring their own supplies, including items such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen, decongestants and antihistamines, and topical creams and other routine medications.

The Student Health Center may administer certain prescription medications as part of medical treatment but cannot accept or store medications brought or shipped from home. The Student Health Center also cannot administer controlled medications, even with a prescription. Families should make arrangements for students’ medication needs before arrival. Special requests should be directed to the Resident Life Director.

Students receiving allergy injections are encouraged to consult with their allergist about adjusting their injection schedule to avoid injections during Governor’s School. Parents with questions should contact the Student Health Center at 540-831-5111.

Required Medical Documentation

All student medical information must be complete and current before arrival at Governor’s School.

Parents or guardians must accurately complete all required medical forms through SchoolDoc.com during online registration, including documentation of:

• Medical history and current health conditions
• Prescription medications
• Allergies and dietary restrictions
• Personal health insurance information
• Prescription insurance card
• Authorization for Administering Prescription Medicine
• Driver’s license or other photo identification, as required

Complete and accurate medical documentation is essential to ensuring appropriate care throughout the program.

Confidentiality of Medical Information

Student health information is confidential and will be shared only with authorized Governor’s School directors, residential life managers, and healthcare providers who require the information to fulfill their responsibilities.
