Residential Boarding Policy

Radford University Residential Boarding Policy

All first time, first semester students under the age of 21 are required to live in Radford University operated housing for at least four consecutive full semesters. Students are subject to the policy based on their status at the time they are admitted to the University.

OBLIGATED STUDENTS
Students are obligated to the boarding policy if they:

  • Are a newly enrolled student at Radford University
  • Are a first semester student under the age of 21
  • Are still within the four consecutive semesters on campus residency requirement
  • Receive a denial for exemption by the Housing Exemption/Cancellation Committee or appropriate designee


NON-OBLIGATED STUDENTS 
Students are not obligated to the boarding policy if they:

  • Are a first semester student that is 21 years of age or older
  • Are a transfer student at the time of their initial enrollment at Radford University
  • Have satisfied all boarding policy requirements
  • Receive an approval for exemption by the Housing Exemption/Cancellation Committee or appropriate designee

    Exemption from the Residential Boarding Policy

    Students obligated to the boarding policy may be eligible for an exemption to this policy if the student:

    • Lives with immediate family members (parents, grandparents, or siblings) or legal guardians who are age 21 or over and are permanent residents within commuting distance of the University (1 hr. drive time or 60 miles).
    • Is married or has dependents.
    • Has served at least one year active duty in U.S. Military forces.
    • Is participating in student teaching, internship, or clinicals within commuting distance of the University (1hr. drive time or 60 miles).
    • Receives permission from the Exemption Committee.

    Exemption requests are submitted through the Academic Year Housing Application located on the Housing Portal. Students must submit rationale and sufficient documentation to their request. More details are found in the request process.

    The Housing Exemption Committee will review requests on a rolling basis. There is no guarantee that a request will be approved.  Requests for exemption can take up to a month to be considered by the committee.

    Please note, exemptions only apply to new students before signing a Residential Student Agreement. See Cancellation of Agreement for more info about cancelling a signed Agreement.
