Gender Inclusive/Neutral Pronouns (PGPs)
Frequently Asked Questions
What are gender inclusive (gender neutral) pronouns?
A gender neutral or gender inclusive pronoun is a pronoun which does not associate
a gender with the individual who is being discussed. For example: If Lisa’s pronouns
are she, her, and hers, you could say “Lisa ate her food because she was hungry.” Or if Logan’s pronouns are ze, zir, and zirs, you could say “Logan ate zir food because ze was hungry.”
Why are gender inclusive/neutral pronouns important?
Understanding pronouns beyond the two options of masculine and feminine builds community
that supports experiences and identities outside of the gender binary. Asking and
correctly using someone’s pronouns is one of the most basic ways to show your respect
for their gender identity. Some people do not wish to be referred to with pronouns
and ask that other simply use their name only.
You can’t always know what someone’s pronouns are by looking at them. The act of not using someone’s proper pronoun is called misgendering. While using pronouns unconsciously may not have bad intent, it is not only disrespectful and hurtful, but may also make those in the transgender community and non-binary individuals feel dismissed and worse, oppressed.
How do I know which pronoun to use?
Though it may be coming from a very supportive and inclusive intention, we do not
always need to know the pronouns of strangers or people around us. However, if this
is someone you connect with regularly, and you do not know how to refer to them, it
is best to ask.
Guide to PronounsIf you are not sure what pronoun somebody uses, ask respectfully. A good example of this is: “What are your preferred pronouns?” Remember a person’s identity does not rely on your understanding the pronouns they prefer. |
