The Center for Diversity and Inclusion is the proud sponsor and organizer of Radford University's annual MLK Day of Service.
Since its inception in 2014, the MLK Day of Service event has been celebrated on the third Monday in January in conjunction with the National Day of Service, a federal holiday. Fifty students participated in the innaugural event which has now grown to more than 400 students, faculty and staff annually.
Each year, faculty, staff and student volunteers go out into the New River and Roanoke valley's to perform community service at over 25 service sites and projects, including Feeding America, Women's Resource Center, Beans & Rice, Radford-Fairlawn Daily Bread food kitchen, Bobcat Backpacks, The Linus Project, Radford Child Development and Early Learning Center, New River Community Action and more. It is a rewarding experience to come together and give back to our local communities.
In January 2021, during the COVID-19 global pandemic, we were challenged to give back in a safe and meaningful way. By partnering with the Community Foundation of the New River Valley's GiveLocalNRV campaign, faculty, staff and students at both the main campus in Radford and Radford University Carilion participated by making donations of money, food and supplies. We raised $4,525 and collected over 2,100 items to benefit Friendship House, Ronald McDonald House, Radford-Fairlawn Daily Bread, Women's Resource Center, The Giving Tree, New River Community Action, Bobcat Backpacks and Beans & Rice programs.
As the proud sponsor and organizer of this special day, the CDI provides a wonderful opportunity to unite the Radford community to address Dr. King's important question, "What are you doing for others?".
