The Black Studies Center (BSC) is welcoming the Radford University community into its newly remodeled space in Hemphill Hall 3108 this fall. Designed as both an academic resource and a gathering place, the Center provides students with a space to study, connect, collaborate, conduct research, and engage with Black Studies beyond the classroom.

 

The revamped Center also houses the growing BSC Library, a collection of books by and about Black people spanning history, literature, sociology, health, gender and sexuality, Appalachia, and other areas of Black life and scholarship. Students are welcome to browse and borrow books, spend time in the Center, learn about research and mentorship opportunities, and connect with African American Studies and Black student organizations across campus.

 

The BSC is kicking off the semester with several opportunities for students to get involved:

• Bonnet & Durag Bedazzling — Wednesday, September 9 | 4–6 p.m.
  Bonnie Dining Hall Stage, next to Chick-fil-A
  • Students are invited to customize their own bonnet or durag with rhinestones, gems and plenty of sparkle. All supplies will be provided.
• Black Studies Center Open House — Tuesday, September 22 | 3–6 p.m.
  Black Studies Center, Hemphill Hall 3108
  • Stop by the newly remodeled Center, explore the BSC Library, meet students and faculty, enjoy refreshments, and learn about African American Studies, undergraduate research, upcoming programs and ways to get involved with the Center.
• Black Student Organization Night — Wednesday, September 23 | 6–7:30 p.m.

  • Meet representatives from Black student organizations across Radford, learn how to get involved and connect with other students interested in building community on campus.
