True honors students seek a "life of the mind" outside the classroom walls, so the Honors College promotes intellectual vibrancy by engaging the honors community in a variety of events and experiences. Honors community include residence halls, scholarly and social events, student leadership opportunities and the chance to travel to other honors conferences each year!
Floyd Hall and Pocahontas Hall are designated for honors housing. These residences are centrally-located on Governors Quad and Moffett Quad, which are short walks to the Bonnie Student Center, Dalton Dining, and the Recreation & Wellness Center. Both halls offer updated rooms, air conditioning, lounges, study spaces, washers/dryers, and a small kitchen. Whereas Floyd Hall is suite style, Pocahontas Hall includes private bathrooms. Many honors courses are located in basement classroom of Floyd Hall. Therefore many honors students are simply a staircase away from their courses. Finally, the main office for the Honors College is on the first floor for Floyd.
Honors students who join out of high school are required to live in Floyd Hall freshman year. A major component of the honors experience is living, learning, and socializing with other honors students. As such all incoming honors students are required to live in Floyd Hall freshman year (many return for subsequent years as well). Varsity athletes and commuters are exempt from this requirement. Students may request a non-honors roommate on a space-availble basis. Make sure to request each other on the Residence Life housing application. Upperclassmen in the Honors College have access to either Floyd Hall or Pocahontas Hall.
Honors College Liaisons
Student leadership is crucial for the success of any honors program. In the Honors
College, nine students are named as Honors Liaisons to assist with major events, outreach
to other communities, and forming positive relationships among each freshman class.
Liaisons also meet with prospective students and families at Admissions events throughout
the year. Current honors students can apply to be an Honors Liaison each spring semester.
Honors Student Council
The HSC is an advisory committee who provide the student perspective on policy and
procedure changes in the Honors College. The first members of this group were appointed
by the director and began holding meetings during 2013. The HSC first established
a constitution for the committee and developed the first handbook for honors students.
The HSC recommends the annual winner of the Award for Faculty Excellence in Honors. If you think something should be changed or improved in honors, contact your HSC
leadership.
