Radford University faculty, students, staff, and research associates conducting research involving human subjects must complete an appropriate course prior to receiving final approval of their IRB protocol. CITI completion certificates are valid for three (3) years.
Note: Please register using your Radford University email address, as this helps our office locate your CITI training records. You do not need to upload CITI completion certificates to IRBManager. The Research Integrity and Compliance Office (RICO) will contact the Principal Investigator (PI) directly if any required training is incomplete.
All research personnel must complete the CITI course "Social and Behavioral Research – Basic/Refresher."
For studies involving patient contact, the Principal Investigator may also require
personnel to complete "Biomedical Research – Basic/Refresher."
Researchers who are applying for or preparing grant proposals should complete the
following additional CITI courses: Data Management for SBE Research and Responsible
Conduct of Research (RCR) Basic
CITI Training Requirements for Student Class Exercises
Students conducting minimal-risk research as part of a class exercise should complete
the CITI course "Students – Class Projects." This course is designed for students
whose projects qualify as no more than minimal-risk human subjects research.
Data collected through class exercises may only be presented within the educational
setting, including classroom presentations and internal university conferences, meetings,
forums, or symposia.
Students intending to present their research outside the Radford University community
or publish their findings must submit an IRB application before conducting the research.
Students whose projects involve greater than minimal risk should contact the Research Integrity and Compliance Office for additional guidance.
CITI Training Requirements for External Researchers, Students, and Consultants
The training status of incoming faculty, staff, students, and collaborators from other
institutions who have completed human subjects research training through another institution
or through a source other than CITI or the NIH Protecting Human Research Participants
training program will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
Individuals who have completed human subjects training outside of CITI may submit
documentation of their training to irb-iacuc@radford.edu for review.
