THEA 232: Theatrical Lighting and Sound

An introduction to the basic equipment and processes of theatrical lighting and sound,
their interconnection, and their operation.
Note(s): Applied Learning designated course.
Detailed Description of Course
The purpose of the course is to expose the student to the principles of stage lighting and sound with emphasis on their use in theatrical production.
1. The production team and their responsibilities with special emphasis on the lighting and sound designer.
2. Characteristics of sound and light and how they function in support of theatrical productions.
3. Basic equipment and its safe operation including: computers, lighting consoles, lighting dimmers, lighting instruments, sound recorders, mixers, microphones, monitors, amplifiers, cables and connectors.
4. The sound and light cues: creating and delivering them to the stage.
Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
A practical approach in which the discovery of the principles used in stage lighting and sound will be emphasized.
Goals and Objectives of the Course
1. To gain a solid understanding of the skills used in theatrical lighting and sound.
2. To develop a common vocabulary used in theatrical lighting and sound.
3. To develop an understanding of the processes used in the fields of lighting and sound.
4. Students will be able to demonstrate the skills and processes used in the theatrical lighting and sound including the operation of sound and lighting control systems.
Assessment Measures
Graded assignments may include in-class tests, a final examination, pop quizzes, the assignment and presentation of projects, class preparation and participation.
