A review of the historical development of social work as a profession and social welfare as an institution, with emphasis on the United States.
Detailed Description of Content of Course
Reviews the historical development of social work as a profession and social welfare as an institution in western civilization with a focus on post-13 th century developments. Emphasis is placed on a developmental lifespan approach.
Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
This course will utilize a variety of teaching techniques. Lectures, class discussions, in-class exercises, outside projects, speakers and videos will be utilized as appropriate.
Goals and Objections of the Course
After satisfactory completion of this course, a student will be able to:
1. Demonstrate a general understanding of concepts relating to history, values and
social policy.
2. Understand the interrelationships among political, economic, cultural, and social
factors in determining perceptions of social problems and the development of social
policy.
3. Utilize information resources to critically examine social welfare issues and policy
alternative.
4. Perform independent study and prepare oral and written reports on specific social
issues or populations in historical context.
Assessment Measures
Student progress in achieving course goals and objectives may be measured in a variety of ways including examination, tests, class exercises, group and individual projects.
