PSYC 641: Theories of Counseling and Psychotherapy
Prerequisites: Graduate status in clinical psychology or permission of the instructor

Course provides students with an overview of current theories of counseling and psychotherapy. The course will include a critical evaluation and comparative study of major theories with emphasis on philosophical assumptions and implications for application.

Course may include use of texts, outside readings, class presentations, discussions and exercises.
Goals and Objectives of the Course
The student will develop a knowledge of the field of counseling psychology. The student will consider the historical development of the field; the areas/settings included; skills in counseling; and the theoretical basis of counseling.
Assessment Measures
Assessment measures may include tests, counseling competence as demonstrated by tapes and student's written analysis of tape; assignment and presentation of exercises and projects; and class preparation and participation.
