POSC 180: The Art and Science of Leadership (GE)

Foundation course in the Leadership minor at Radford University. The minor in Leadership is an interdisciplinary program designed to complement any major by introducing leadership theories and practices to enable students to exercise leadership as professionals and active citizens.

Note(s): General Education and Applied Learning designated course. Students may not earn credit for LEAD 110 and POSC 180.

 

Detailed Description of Course Content

This is a foundation course in the Leadership minor at Radford University. The minor in Leadership is an interdisciplinary program designed to complement any major by introducing leadership theories and practices to enable students to exercise leadership as professionals and active citizens.

The course introduces provides an introduction to the theories and practices of leadership. Topics covered may include the nature of leadership, recognizing leadership traits, developing leadership skills, and the ethical problems in the exercise of leadership and use of authority.

It uses lectures, in-class exercises, case studies, experiential learning, and personal reflection to give students an appreciation of the fundamental theories and concepts as well as the practical strategies and disciplines of leadership. 



Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

This course will emphasize learning through lectures, in-class discussion, case studies, independent research and experiential exercises.

In-class performance and participation are key to success in this course to facilitate student learning and retention, and synthesis of the lessons on leadership. Active participation in all class activities is required. 



Goals and Objectives of the Course

Upon completion of this course students will be able to:

  • Identify and explain the foundational theories of leadership.
  • Apply the theories and (tools of) techniques learned in the course to real-life situations and hypothetical scenarios.
  • Evaluate the usefulness of leadership theories and practices in professional and social contexts.

 

Assessment Measures

The assessment of student learning outcomes will be based on a combination of the following: Writing assignments, examinations, in-class participation, reflection and experiential learning exercises, and/or service-learning projects.
