NURS 827: Doctorate of Nursing Practice Executive Leadership Residency

Prerequisites: Advanced nursing courses required in Nurse Executive Leadership concentration: NURS 700 , NURS 702 , NURS 704 , NURS 800 , NURS 802 , NURS 804 , NURS 810 , NURS 812

Credit Hours: Variable credit, (1-12)

This is the course work required for the DNP Residency In Executive Leadership. This Residency is an extensive leadership experience focusing on executive leadership in education, policy, practice, research and/or business within an area of student interest.

Note(s): Variable credit hours; may be repeated for credit; may not exceed 4 credit hours per term; must total 12 by end of the program


Detailed Description of Course

The residency is an immersion experience that includes in depth work with experts from nursing and other disciplines.  Advanced nursing roles and experiences assist students in development and assimilation of complex knowledge, decision making and administrative detail.  The residency provides the framework for the Capstone project in which the student identifies, develops, and implements a project involving educational leadership, policy, business practice, or a research interest that culminates in a publishable paper, program and presentation.


Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

May include but is not limited to completion of prerequisite course requirements, 540 required executive leadership ‘immersion’  hours by end of program, and, student-directed discussions and presentations, reading assignments, written work, self- reflection and journaling, and conferences with faculty advisors and designated preceptors. The online component of this course may include audio or video presentations/lectures, discussion boards, chat rooms, videoconferencing, and other instructional technology strategies.  


Goals and Objectives of this Course

Upon completion of the course the student will be able to:

1. Demonstrate critical decision-making in leadership situations that deal with complex administrative issues.
2. Employ evidence-based practice in executive decision-making and administrative challenges in order to promote wellness, prevent illness, manage illness and maintain independent function at the highest possible levels for individuals, groups, and populations.
3. Participate in quality improvement and evaluation at varying levels of administration in the health care system.
4. Demonstrate in depth work with experts in nursing and other disciplines in an executive/administrative area of specialization.
5. Demonstrate DNP leadership role competencies. (Essentials of Advanced Nursing Practice (AACN, 2008; Council on Graduate Education for Administration in Nursing, 2011).
6. Examine and interpret emerging regulatory issues, standards of practice, health care and legislative trends in diverse settings across the health care delivery system.
7. Obtain Advanced Executive Leadership Certification from AONEL or ANCC.


Assessment Measures

May include but are not limited to:

Faculty/preceptor evaluations, student self-evaluation, completion of course requirements and required executive leadership immersion hours, development of executive leadership competencies, demonstration of experiential competencies, oral presentations and written work, including logs, and journals.
