NURS 752: Adult-Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist-Preceptorship
Prerequisite: NURS 740, NURS 741, NURS 744, NURS 745, NURS 748, NURS 749; or permission of faculty

This course is the final clinical practicum course for the Clinical Nurse Specialist
Program
Detailed Description of Content of the Course
This course will provide the CNS student with concentrated advanced nursing practice
experiences in an area of the student’s interest with a preceptor in selected health
care settings.
Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
The non-clinical portions of the course will be online to facilitate communication
between faculty & students and may include but are not limited to: faculty/student
directed discussions, reading assignments, and written work which may include clinical
logs, journals or protocols/guidelines. Because the course is online, audio or video
presentations/lectures, discussion boards, chat rooms and other instructional technology
strategies may be used for communication purposes. In addition it may include but
not limited to: video demonstration(s) with consenting patients of various components
demonstrating appropriate clinical decision making of the evaluation and management
of patient care across the lifespan.
Goals and Objectives of this Course
By the end of the course the student will:
1. Promote health and improve quality of life through direct interaction with patients,
families, and groups.
2. Demonstrate a holistic perspective in the advanced nursing management of health,
illness, and disease states.
3. Demonstrate expertise in complex problem solving with staff, interprofessional,
and system focused issues.
4. Manage change and empower others to influence clinical practice and political
processes within and across systems.
5. Collaborate at an advanced level through authentic engagement and constructive
patient, family, system, and population focused problem solving.
6. Provide skillful guidance and teaching to advance the care of patients, families,
groups, and populations, and the profession of nursing.
7. Demonstrates identification, interpretation, and use of evidence in clinical practice
and quality improvement.
8. Identify, articulate, and take action on ethical concerns at the patient, family,
health care provider, system, community, and public policy levels.
Assessment Measures
May include but are not limited to: Preceptor and faculty evaluation of clinical
performance. Completion of clinical logs, journal, protocols, and other clinical guidelines,
case studies; quizzes; student presentations, and other strategies including using
available technology for direct observation of clinical practice.
