Mental Health and the Older Adult - Clinical

Prerequisites: Graduate Nursing Status
This course is the clinical practicum that accompanies the theory course NURS 707. It is designed to prepare students to expand upon their theory knowledge that is concurrently taught in NURS 707. This course will provide a minimum of 90 hours of practicum with older adults experiencing mental and emotional challenges.
2. Detailed Description of Course
This clinical course will expand upon issues and treatment of older adults with mental and emotional illnesses but also address assessment and psychosocial determinants of aging. Family and caregivers, together with interprofessional collaboration, will also be expanded upon clinically.
3. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
This is an online course and may include but is not limited to faculty and student led discussions, lectures, guest speakers, papers, quizzes, case studies and treatment parameters, chat rooms, and audio and visual presentations. An interprofessional framework will be discussed in lecture.
4. Goals and Objectives of the Course
Demonstrate competency in the assessment and communication/discussion of the emotional challenges and illnesses that effect older adults. Assess and develop treatment plans. Analyze and submit discussion of case studies, using evidence based criteria. Demonstrate critical thinking in the synthesis and application of knowledge necessary to assess older clients, their families and the resources needed with older adults experiencing mental illness.
5. Assessment Measures
May include but are not limited to: demonstration of clinical competency in assessment
and treatment, completion of logs for each patient, preceptor and faculty evaluations,
case study discussion and participation, faculty site visits.
