V. Course Description: An administrative practicum experience is supervised by practice
experts in nursing and healthcare administration. Competencies essential for the role
of the nurse administrator are practiced and refined.
VI. Detailed Description of Content of the Course:
Students work with a practice expert healthcare leader, either in Nursing or Healthcare
Administration in a practicum experience that allows them to learn and demonstrate
the role and competencies of administrative leadership. Competencies essential for
the role of the nurse administrator are demonstrated and refined.

VI. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course:
- There are 2 main components to the administrative practicum: Precepted Hours and Non-Precepted
Hours
- A minimum of 135 total hours (45 hrs. per credit) are required for the practicum experience
as follows:
Precepted Hours: A minimum of 45 hours (1-credit) working with (face-to-face time)
a Master or Doctoral prepared preceptor in a leadership and/or management role in
nursing or healthcare.
Sample Activities (activities and hours will vary):
- Attend leadership meetings and preceptor 4 hours
- Preceptor-guided learning activities 4 hours
- Strategic planning activities 4 hours
- Financial/budgeting activities 4 hours
- Other leadership activities 4 hours
- Observation of leaders/preceptor 4 hours
- Practicum project work 20 hours
- Presentation of project to preceptor 1 hour
- Total 45 hours
Non-Precepted Hours: A minimum of 90 hours (2-credits) attending related conferences
and/or events, engaging in leadership project(s) or activities, developing the MSN
portfolio, and/or other activities to build administrative leadership knowledge and
skills while accomplishing the Practicum course objectives. Precepted hours can replace
nonprecepted hours.

- Conferences/seminars/webinars (Session objectives must link to Course and/or Practicum
objectives) 8 hours

- Committee meeting attendance with nursing or healthcare managers/leaders/executives

- Practicum Course Discussion Forum literature search, review, and posts 4 hours
- Total 90 hours
- 90 hours (two credits) of practicum occur cumulatively via faculty approved practicum
assignments in other courses and within the Practicum course. All hours are logged
as part of the Practicum course completion requirements.
