NURS 640: Nursing Administration
Prerequisites: Graduate standing

This course is designed for students to examine theories, principles, and applications of roles, characteristics and functions related to nursing administration. The focus is on delivery of high-quality and cost-effective care in a fiscally constrained health care delivery system.

Detailed Description of Course
This course will prepare the student to function in the role of a nurse manager or administrator within the health care delivery system. Students will explore various methods for successful operation within a highly competitive health care environment, while providing high-quality and cost-effective care. An emphasis will be placed on utilization and management of fiscal, technological, and human resources to ensure optimal system functioning. The classroom will provide a forum for analyzing theoretical components of management, and applying management techniques.
Goals and Objectives of the Course
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Synthesize the relationships between nursing administration, management, and the
working environment.
2. Analyze the interface between nursing management of scarce resources and the current
health care environment.
3. Correlate nursing administrative functions with the use of technology in managing
the working environment.
4. Analyze management techniques used in the allocation of human resources.
5. Investigate methods used to maintain quality and cost-effective nursing departments.
