MUSC558. Accompanying
Two hours lab/coaching (1).
Prerequisite: Permission of instructor
Piano/guitar accompanying in class, applied lessons, rehearsals and public performances. May be repeated for credit.
Detailed Description of Content of Course
Study of accompanying techniques. Study of ensemble performance including stage presence, repertoire, and musical style, and of articles and books related to the art of music collaboration.Study of special piano techniques required for ensemble playing.
Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
The Lab offers continual opportunity for each student to practice Sight Reading techniques, to perform, and to discuss all aspects of ensemble performance. Other students are invited into the Lab to work with accompanying students. Accompanying students receive assignments to applied studios for hands-on work outside of the classroom. Some of this work results in performances with other students. Other faculty may be invited to the Lab to present their views on ensemble performance and to work with the accompanying students. Students also receive out-of-class individual coaching and coaching with their ensemble.
Goals and Objectives of the Course
At the conclusion of the course, the student will have developed workable and artistic skills in sight reading and music collaboration and will have knowledge of performance practice in the art of collaboration.
Assessment Measures
Students are graded on their preparation for rehearsals and performances and their progress through the semester.
Other Course Information
There is an attempt to offer students as much variety and experience as possible in ensemble playing. Students are also encouraged to attend concerts and listen to recordings of collaborative performances.
