MUSC 477: MUSIC IN THERAPY

Prerequisites: Senior standing, all music therapy core courses and upper level standing as a Music Therapy major

Credit Hours: (3)

An intensive study of music in therapy including an in-depth integration with major schools of thought in psychotherapy. Additional material to include internship preparation and certification examination preparation.
 

Detailed Description of Content of Course

The purpose of this course is to prepare the student music therapist for entry into the professional arena. The topics covered will include:

Application of music as therapy to all areas of human functioning:

• psycho-emotional, cognitive/intellectual, physiological, social, spiritual
• Music as therapy within the major treatment models:
• Psychodynamic, behavioral, medical, cognitive, humanistic


Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

An informal lecture and experiential approach will be employed. Additionally, students will present varied topics based on research related to music and its role in the major treatment modalities. This material will be presented to the class in a clear and concise manner and, in addition to course content, will address the student’s oral communication skills. Students will be required to demonstrate competence in oral communication skills in order to pass the course.


Goals and Objectives

To prepare the student music therapist for entry into the role of intern.
Integrate core music therapy coursework into a personal philosophy of music therapy.
Integrate major treatment modalities with methods of music therapy intervention.
To develop oral communication skills necessary to successfully function as a music therapist.
 

Assessment Measures

Assignments will include exams, written papers, book reports, class presentations and participation/attendance.
