Introduces basic techniques including application of aural and rhythmic skills. Fall.
Detailed Description of Content of Course
This basic, introductory course in conducting encompasses development of facility in the areas of: score reading skills, baton technique, clarity of beat patterns, preparatory beats and releases, subdivision, interpretation, and rehearsal procedures for the conductor. Some class sessions are devoted to the study of the instruments of the modern wind band and symphony orchestra, orchestration techniques, and the comprehension of basic foreign terminology. Because of their vital integration with the study and practical application of conducting, there are frequent review sessions in the 'materials of music', i.e. listening skills, analysis, sight- reading/sight-singing, dictation, and music history.
Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
Students conduct selected excerpts from the text with the instructor at the keyboard on a regular basis. In addition, students have opportunities to conduct a portion of a rehearsal with university ensembles. Includes four conducting evaluations and three conducting observation papers.

Goals and Objectives of the Course
At the conclusion of the course students will have developed basic baton technique and rehearsal/leadership skills to hold effective rehearsals in preparation for a performance of instrumental and/or vocal literature commensurate with beginning level conductors.
ASSESSMENT MEASURES
There are four graded conducting evaluations plus a 3-5 page paper.

Required Text: The Art of Conducting by Donald Hunsberger and Roy Ernst. Pub. Alfred A. Knopf, 1983.
Numerous handouts and a recommended reading list is also provided. Students are provided with a list of ten off-campus recommended performances to attend with ensembles having a conductor.
