MUSC 310 WIND BANDS. (1)

One hour rehearsal

Wind Ensemble (auditioned seating) and Symphonic Band (open seating). Emphasis on study and performance of a wide variety of band literature. Concerts and sectionals are required in addition to weekly rehearsals. Open to qualified students.

Note(s): Humanistic or Artistic Expression designated course. May be taken again for credit.

 

Detailed Description of Content of Course

The Concert Band rehearses and performs quality original wind band literature and orchestral transcriptions. Although comprised of many non-music majors, music majors--particularly music education majors--gain valuable exposure and insights to the basic college and high school band repertory.

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

1. Seating Placement Auditions
2. Rehearsal preparation of works to be performed. Preparation includes listening to recordings when appropriate and gaining some added insight about the composer and music through lecture and/ore discussion.
3. Performance (typically 2 or 3 per semester)

 

Goals and Objectives of the Course

At the conclusion of the course, the student will have rehearsed and performed the highest quality wind band literature and orchestral transcriptions under the Director of Bands, guest conductors and student conductors. Students (including many non-music majors) will have broadened their repertory, improved their technical expertise and sense of ensemble.

 

Assessment Measures

Grades are based upon individual part preparation, performance execution and strict adherence to a clearly stated attendance policy.
