MUSC 102: Fundamentals of Music Therapy
Prerequisites: Music major (MUS or PMUS) or permission of instructor

Principles and practice in the field of music therapy. Required of all music therapy majors and open to students in other curricula with permission of instructor.
Detailed Description of Content of Course
The purpose of this course is to survey basic literature in music therapy, basic assumptions and practices, and to orient the student to clinical applications of music therapy. Course content will include:
• Definition of Music Therapy
o Discussion of therapy
o Discussion of music and its various uses
o Differentiation between music in and music as therapy
• Survey of components of music and their relationship to therapy
• History of therapeutic uses of music
• Discussion of application of music therapy with a variety of populations
• Discussion of professional ethics
• Discussion of professional standards of clinical practice
• Discussion of professional competencies
• Applications of technology in music therapy
• Introduction to research literature in music therapy
• Discussion of goals, objectives, and session planning
Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
An informal approach emphasizing lecture, discussion, and experiential components will be employed. Information will include foundational research in music therapy, definition of music therapy, skills and traits of music therapists, and an introduction to assessment, treatment, and evaluation, through music therapy methods.
Goals and Objectives
At the conclusion of the course, the student will:
• Understand the roles and responsibilities of professional music therapists and ethical
implications
• Demonstrate a functional understanding of the research in the field of music therapy
• Define music therapy using supporting literature
• Write goals and objectives for a session plan
Assessment Measures
Graded assignments will include exams, written papers, session plans and evaluations, attendance, and active participation.
