Math 399: Mathematics Education Research Seminar II
Prerequisites: MATH 398 or permission of the instructor.
Credit Hours: (1)
Designed to further develop the mathematics majors as mathematics education researchers. The attention is placed on developing the prospectus for a study, in which the data collection phase can start in the latter part of the semester or during the summer.
Detailed Description of Course
Course content includes:
1) Learning the parts for a prospectus.
2) Learn quantitative or qualitative methods needed to engage in data collection and
analysis.
3) Create a research design for sampling, data collection, and data analysis.
4) Write a prospectus pertaining to the students' mathematics education research topic.
5) Receive IRB approval for their study.

Course delivery methods will include classroom lectures and lab works. Lectures may include discussion, group work, examples and presentations.

Student Goals and Objectives of the Course
The goal of the course is to introduce mathematics majors to mathematics education research. At the conclusion of this course, students will be able to:
1) Analyze the methods sections in a mathematics education peer reviews article to
identify the research design, sampling, data collection, and analysis.
2) Identify common mathematics education research methods (e.g. Quantitative: paired
t-test, ANOVA; Qualitative: interview, teaching experiment; Mixed Methods - a method
gaining attention).
3) Design the data collection instruments.
4) Receive IRB approval for a study.
5) Write a prospectus for a research topic that addresses the research purpose and
be able to answer research questions.
Assessment Measures
Assessment of the student's success in the course will be based on assignments, final product, and participation that is linked to attendance.
