MATH 346: Differential Equations

Prerequisites: MATH 260  and a grade of “C” or better in MATH 172.

Credit Hours: (3)

A study of techniques for solving differential equations, including first and second order equations and linear systems of equations; Laplace transform and numerical methods. Applications in the sciences will be considered.

Note(s): Scientific and Quantitative Reasoning designated course.

Detailed Description of Course

Topics typically include:
    1) First order differential equations, including linear, separable and exact differential equations
    2) Second and higher order equations, fundamental solutions and linear independence
    3) Equations with constant coefficients
    4) Linear systems of first order equations
    5) The Laplace transform
    6) Numerical methods
    7) Techniques for non-linear systems
    8) Applications

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Classes will be conducted in lecture format with time reserved for discussion.  The students will be required to use current technologies for some of the assignments, and a few (2-5) lectures will serve as laboratory sessions in preparation for these assignments.

Goals and Objectives of the Course

Acquire a working knowledge of basic results and methods for differential equations.

Assessment Measures

The assessment measure will vary among instructors and may include in-class examinations, homework assignments, computer projects, and performance in class and in laboratory activities.

Other Course Information

None.
