Math 325: Special Methods – Secondary Mathematics Education
Prerequisites: MATH 172
Credit Hours: (3)
A special methods course in the teaching of mathematics at the secondary level. Will not satisfy the requirements for a major in mathematics except for those in the Bachelor of Science degree program pursuing certification to teach. Special emphasis will be placed on the role of technology in teaching, problem solving, and representation of mathematics concepts.

Content
Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
Most instructors will use whole class and small group discussion along with some lecture. A variety of other instructional methods will also be used including collaborative small groups, computer demonstrations, and problem solving using concrete manipulatives. Students will be required to make individual presentations to the class.
Student Goals and Objectives of the Course
1) The student is expected to acquire knowledge and skills about mathematics content
and effective mathematics teaching as indicated in the NCTM standards.
2) The student is expected to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to become
a professional mathematics educator.
3) The students will develop appropriate mathematical communication skills, make connections
between and among mathematical ideas and in contexts outside mathematics
to build mathematical understanding, use diverse mathematical representations to develop
understanding of mathematical concepts, and including the use of technology
to present those models.
Assessment Measures
Graded tasks may include tests, quizzes, homework exercises, and class presentations and attendance.
Other Course Information
This course is intended for students who are preparing to teach secondary school mathematics.
