Managing Professional Communication and Negotiations

Prerequisite: Junior Standing
Instruction in effective written and oral communications commonly used by leaders
and managers in business organizations, and in effective negotiating skills and practices.
Note(s): Applied Learning designated course.
2. Detailed Description of Course
This course provides instruction and practice in a variety of communication types
and methods currently used in business organizations and in basic negotiation techniques.
Students will gain skills and knowledge in communicating orally and in writing and
will apply these skills in learning about effective negotiation techniques and practices.
Topics may include:
1) Basics of business writing and speaking
2) Communication usage, style, and tone
3) Document design, information synthesis, and message organization
4) Constructing and delivering effective presentations
5) Different approaches to negotiations
6) Negotiation styles, tactics, and techniques
3. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
Lecture, class discussion, experiential exercises, and oral presentations.
4. Goals and Objectives of the Course
At the conclusion of the course, the student will be able to:
1) Analyze and design communication strategies for different audiences.
2) Select the appropriate communication medium for different types of communications.
3) Plan and deliver effective oral presentations.
4) Structure and write effective memos, letters, e-mail correspondence, and reports.
5) Identify important issues relevant to preparing for common professional negotiations.
6) Identify and plan appropriate strategies for common professional negotiations.

Assessment measures may include writing assignments, presentations, individual exercises,
and examinations.
