III. Credit Hours: 3-6 credits
IV. Prerequisites: IDSL major, IDST 250, junior standing, permission of director.
V. Course Description:
Offers students an opportunity to integrate and apply knowledge and skills gained in the major. An Internship consists of a field-based learning opportunity with a sponsoring organization.
VI. Detailed Description of Content of the Course:
The interdisciplinary internship is a field-based learning opportunity in an organization related to the student’s areas of study. The student works with designated organization personnel, receives an overview of organization functions, and completes assignments and projects within the organization.
VI. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course:
In the internship, the student will be exposed to the qualifications and work requirements of an organization. The student will apply theory and methods learned from the major to a practical work setting. Participating organizations will permit students to become involved in the work of their organization and, when possible, make contributions to the organization.
VII. Goals and Objectives of the Course:
Upon successful completion of the internship experience, students will:
1) Gain experience in a work environment related to their areas of study
2) Demonstrate their ability to integrate and assimilate ideas from the major
3) Recognize the individual and group processes within a specific organizational
setting
4) Adhere to professional norms and demonstrate appropriate behavior with regard
to work assignments
5) Describe how their personal values and perceptions relate to other individuals
and groups in an organizational setting
VIII. Assessment Measures:
Students will be assessed by both the faculty advisor and the site supervisor. Academic assignments will include reflecting on the relationship between their coursework and their internship as well as a final product.
