IV. Prerequisites:  Declared major in Computer Science and Technology or Cybersecurity or Information Science and Systems.

V. Course Description: 

Provides an introduction to the fundamental principles of information technology, problem solving, and the fields that comprise information technology.

VI. Detailed Description of Content of the Course:

Topics include:

  1. IT fundamentals
  2. Computer science fundamentals
  3. Software engineering
  4. Information systems
  5. Database
  6. Networks
  7. Fundamental programming concepts

VI. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course:

Class lecture and discussion sessions present and explain the history of information technology, the fundamental principles including basic hardware and software design, the fields and career paths which make up information technology, and problem solving techniques, illustrated by examples.

VII. Goals and Objectives of the Course:

Students who complete the course will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of computer science concepts as a foundation for taking higher-level CS courses.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of information systems concepts as a foundation for taking higher-level IS courses.
  3. Describe the fundamental constructs of programming languages.
  4. Explain basic concepts of information technology and applications.
  5. Describe issues related to security, privacy, and ethics in information technology.
  6. Students will be able to reflect on how the skills they learn in this class will apply to professional roles.

VIII. Assessment Measures:

Assessments, which may include in-class exams, presentations, homework assignments, projects, labs, and quizzes will be used to measure each student’s performance.
