V. Course Description: Theory, concepts, and techniques used in accounting and finance functions of healthcare organizations are examined. Students gain an understanding of the significance in finance in healthcare organizations and learn various techniques to develop, manage, and control finances. Additionally, students learn how to develop, apply, and interpret various financial tools as a part of the managerial decision-making process.

Topic: Cost Reporting Paper
The students will explore the various aspects of a Medicare Cost Report and become familiar with the integrated roles of both clinical and non-clinical departments in gathering information for its preparation. A 5-7 page paper will be provide an overview of the general process, along with some of the major considerations in maximizing reimbursement for the health care facility or system.
Questions to address in this paper can include:
Why is a cost report necessary?
How does Medicare/Medicaid use the cost report?
Using the report, what types of operating decisions are made by the reporting entity?
What are the roles of managers, both clinical and non-clinical, in the preparation of a cost report.
If using charts, tables, graphs, etc. be sure to use APA formatting.

Topic: Healthy Living Case Study
Having completed the 3 of the 4 sections of the Hospital for Healthy Living in previous weeks, the students should analyze the financial statements and ratios and then prepare a PowerPoint presentation of 10-12 slides detailing the solutions to the 4 questions and providing appropriate data/information. Each slide should be creative and include speaker notes of 150-200 words minimum.
