HSCI 716 - Qualitative Research Methods for Health Sciences

Instructional Method: Three hours lecture.

Catalog Description
An introduction to qualitative research concepts and techniques. A basic overview of ethical and legal guidelines for conducting qualitative research is examined. Students will apply qualitative research processes.

 

Content

This course is taught in weekly modules. Major topics include qualitative research design, conducting interviews, focus groups, observations and document and archival records, and conducting a literature review.

Instructional strategies for this course include discussion boards, required and supplemental readings, modular activities, and synchronous zoom sessions.

At the completion of this course students will be able to:

1. Discuss and apply qualitative theory
2. Illustrate use of relevant literature to write a research purpose and design qualitative research questions
3. Apply observational research skills
4. Create a focus group script
5. Discuss maintenance of field relationships
6. Explain qualitative research ethical components
7. Discuss and design a thematic analysis
8. Analyze and report qualitative data

 

Assessment Measures

Assessment strategies for this course include quizzes, discussion boards, rubrics for assessment of the course papers, and qualitative research assignments/activities (ex. interviews).
