Catalog Description
Focuses on the understanding and analysis of health-related information, such as patient data, electronic health records (EHR), and publicly available datasets. Data analysis includes techniques for identifying, exploring, and interpreting data patterns and trends. Health analytics concepts are presented within a larger context of population health informatics.

 

Content

The course content is divided into four modules:

Module I: Overview of Health Informatics and Analytics 

Objectives: 

• Examine the need for informatics and associated data analytics in population health and health care 
• Assess the organizational challenges faced by administrators when putting an informatics program into place 

Module 2: Health Informatics and Analytic Complexities  

Objective: 

• Describe technical issues associated with gathering, processing, utilizing and securing health data 

Module 3: Population Informatics Systems 

Objectives: 

• Discuss design and evaluation of health informatics and analytic systems 
• Describe current relevant systems and applications in use in population health and health care 

Module 4: Other Informatics and Analytics Areas of Interest: ROI, Security, Sustainability 

Objectives: 

• Assess financial and privacy issues surrounding informatics and analytics 
• Discuss areas for innovation and sustainability within the realm of healthcare analytics

The course is assessed utilizing the following:

Participation. Includes discussion posts and mandatory Zoom sessions 
Module Quizzes (4) 
Data Analysis Assignments (3 assignments) 
Case Study Assignments (2 assignments)

Having successfully completed this course, the student will be able to:

1. Evaluate data analysis techniques and trends used to assess population health and health systems. 
2. Analyze evidence-based approaches to evaluate population health informatics concerns.
