Will provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to distinguish legitimate health information and misinformation. In addition, students will learn to make informed decisions pertaining to fitness and nutrition, major health problems, and other health-related diseases and conditions.
Detailed Description of Content of Course
This course will provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to make informed decisions regarding the use of health products and services. The purpose of this course is to increase student awareness of consumer health issues including quackery and health fraud related to health services, alternative health care, fitness, nutrition, consumer protection, and other health-related products and services.
Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
Students will gain knowledge through lectures, guest speakers, and group discussion.
Goals and Objectives of the Course
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
1. Define consumer health;
2. Demonstrate the ability to make informed decisions about health care, health services, health products, and health care providers;
3. Examine marketing techniques used to promote health products and services;
4. Differentiate between legitimate health products and services and quackery;
5. Evaluate and discuss various health-related issues and products;
6. Differentiate between the various types of health insurance options;
7. Describe health care economics;
8. Discuss consumer laws, agencies, and strategies.
