FORL 409: Study Abroad Practicum
Prerequisite: 18 hours of language instruction or four years in high school
Credit Hours: (3-18)
15 hours practice minimum per week
A directed program of travel-study designed to augment a student’s knowledge of the language and culture of a particular country. Students will receive a minimum of 15 hours of formal language instruction per week in addition to being involved in a total immersion living situation. Permission by the Department Chair is required prior to enrollment. This course has been approved for credit in the Foreign Languages Area of the Core Curriculum.
Detailed Description of Content of Course
Advanced level instruction in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and culture.
Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
Intensive advanced practice in the target culture and with native speakers in listening, speaking, reading, and writing the foreign language will be given in conjunction with current cultural topics and activities.
Goals and Objectives of Course
Students will achieve a degree of competence in a foreign language and culture.
Students will be able to:
a. demonstrate language skills appropriate to the level of study
b. analyze similarities and differences between their own and the target cultures
c. explain contemporary international issues from the perspectives of their own and the target cultures
Assessment Measures
Assessment measures will gauge skill development in the four language skills (e.g. multiple choice questions, oral interviews, and writing assignments) and knowledge of the cultural topics covered.
