DSNF 202: Presentation Techniques
Prerequisites: DSN 100, DSN 110, DSN 143, DSN 173 and DSNF 105; 2.5 in-major GPA; passing Basic Skills Assessment; or permission of instructor

Introduction to fashion sketching, design vision and process, target market interpretation, and line development.
Detailed Description of Course
The student will explore garment sketching and presentation media. Topics include: fashion figure drawing; technical drawing; fabric/texture identification and representation; garment details; target markets and line development; design vision and process.
Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
Demonstration will provide an overview of fashion sketching techniques. In studio, the student will acquire basic sketching skills and apply the design process to the development of original design ideas. Graphic representation skills are developed through the exploration of various media and rendering techniques and creativity of expression and conceptual thinking are also emphasized.
Student Goals and Objectives of the Course
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will demonstrate:
1. Difference between a fashion illustration and a fashion drawing/sketch.
2. Rapid visualization techniques for expressing/demonstrating design solutions.
3. Fashion sketching through the use of croquis, free-hand, and other techniques.
4. Media and presentation techniques.
5. Design vision (verbal and visual representation - branding).
6. Elements and principles of design applications appropriate for target markets, including body interaction with garment structure, function, and aesthetics.
7. Garment style identification.
8. Target market research characteristics and fashion trends, including information gathering for selection and presentation of color, fabric, accessories and decorative elements.
9. Assembling styles for an apparel line.
Demonstrate knowledge of:
10. Technical drawings, including representation of shaping/fitting devices and style lines.
11. Design process documentation and communication.
12. Elements and principles of design as applied to presentations, including functional drivers
13. Self and peer critique processes and application.
14. Use of color in apparel applications.
Assessment Measures
Studio assignments, including exercises, projects, presentations and critiques, will assess the students’ ability to successfully apply sketching and presentation skills. Written and oral critiques, preliminary design ideas, craftsmanship and concept development comprise an integral part of the evaluation criteria for all projects.
