Application of therapeutic exercises and therapeutic modalities in injury rehabilitation.
Detailed Description of Course
This course is designed to provide students with experience in major aspects of injury rehabilitation including treatment modalities and exercise for rehabilitation. This course is designed to provide opportunites to improve critical thinking skills through the selection and application of appropriate exercises and modalities for rehabilitation.
Detailed Description of Doncut of Course
Students will be taught using a variety of methods including lecture, problem-solving sessions and hands-on experiences. Students will participate in flipped classroom activities and work in groups to assess skills of other class members.
Goals and Objectives of Course
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
1) Describe the pathophysiology of musculoskeletal injuries and the healing process.
2) Describe basic rehabilitation goals and the factors involved to include: prevention,
evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation and recondition.
3) Describe basic rehabilitation goals and the factors involved (i.e., prevention,
evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation and recondition).
4) Describe methods of range of motion (ROM), proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation
(PNF) patterns, contraction/relaxation and stabilization techniques, and exercise
techniques.
5) Perform manual muscle tests for major muscles, appropriately document the results
and design rehabilitation programs accordingly.
6) Interpret, discuss, and compare various rehabilitation protocols at various stages
of the rehabilitation process for multiple body parts.
7) Demonstrate open and closed chain "functional" exercises.
8) Describe, diagram and explain the concept of pain and current theories on how it
is trasmitted.
9) Compare and contrast the major pain control theories and the associated rationale
for the method employed in the control of acute and chronic pain.
10) Describe the physiological process of wound healing as it relates to modality
usage and selection.
11) Explain the therapeutic indications and contraindications associated with heat,
cold, intermittent compression, and therapeutic laser.
12) Demonstrate the patient preparation, administration and dosage regulation of each
modailty listed above.
Assessment Measures
