I. Course Title: Assessment and Prescription in Exercise, Sport and Health Education

II. Course Number: ESHE 396 

III. Credit Hours: 3 credits

IV. Prerequisites: HLTH 200 and ESHE 391 or ESHE 392

V. Course Description: Designed to examine the techniques of assessing physical fitness and provide practice assessing physical fitness components. This information will be interpreted and developed into an exercise prescription. Advanced techniques of assessment will be used in this class.

VI. Detailed Description of Content of the Course:

Designed to examine the techniques of assessing physical fitness, and provide practice assessing physical fitness components. This will include interpretation of results, and developing individual prescriptions based on fitness testing results. All tests are used in future jobs in the field. The students will evaluate, and practice assessment skills in:

  • Cardiovascular endurance.
  • Muscular strength and muscular endurance.
  • Flexibility.
  • Blood pressure.
  • Body composition.
  • Estimates of VO2 Max.
  • Direct measure of VO2 Max.
  • Reading and interpretation of ECG’s.
  • Effects of medicines during exercise testing and in prescription.

The students will develop individual prescriptions based on the physical fitness data collected and write exercise prescriptions similar to work-life situation. Guidelines for testing and working with adults and special populations will be developed.

VI. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course:

Teaching methods may include one or more of the following:

  • Lecture
  • Guest speakers
  • Lab activities
  • Problem-based learning
  • Case studies

VII. Goals and Objectives of the Course:

Upon successful completion of the course, students shall be able to:

  1. Utilize bicycle, treadmill, and walk/run tests of cardiovascular endurance while monitoring blood pressure, heart rate, subjective feedback and ECGs where appropriate.
  2. Utilize dynamometers, weights, and body weight in tests of muscular strength and endurance.
  3. Utilize equipment to estimate body composition such as skin calipers, air displacement plethysmography, and bioelectrical impedance.
  4. Utilize goniometer, flexometer, and sit and reach tests to evaluate flexibility.
  5. Explain the use of gas analysis equipment to measure VO2 Max during exercise.
  6. Use the information collected in items 1 to 5 to develop individual prescriptions. These will be presented in written and oral reports to simulated clients.
  7. Explain the guidelines for testing to clients and staff.
  8. Critically reflect on the assessment skills, their use in the future jobs, and the skills they need to work on to become professionals in the field.
