DNCE 470: Methods of Teaching Dance
Prerequisites: DNCE 370
Credit Hours: (2-3) Two to three hours lecture.
Principles and techniques dance with emphasis on students in grades 6-12. Theory and field experience combine to provide pedagogical knowledge and skills. Students devise and implement learning experiences in dance which are appropriate and meaningful for middle and secondary students.

4. Application of teaching techniques to the teaching of dance
a. Ballet
b. Modern dance
c. Social, folk, and square dance
d. Tap dance
e. Jazz dance
Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
Material may be presented through lecture, class discussion, studio observation (students watching both other students and teachers), and practical application (students teaching in a studio). Students may be required to keep a log to document observations of their own and others' learning processes.
Goals and Objectives of the Course
At the conclusion of the course the student should:
1. Be familiar with general theories of learning.
2. Have an awareness of general teaching strategies.
3. Be able to apply learning and teaching principles to the teaching of dance technique.
Assessment Measures
Evaluation may be administered through written and oral exams, direct observation of the student in a teaching situation, paper and reports, learning logs, student/teacher conferences, participation in class discussion, and class attendance.
Other Course Information
Whenever feasible, this course should include a component of practical experience in teaching dance technique. The student's teaching should be observed by the course instructor and/or other competent supervisor and later discussed with the student.
