DNCE 465: Dance Production
Credit Hours: (3) Two hours lecture; two hours laboratory.
Principles of preparation for a dance production, including costuming for dance, make-up for dance, organization and management. Offers experience in practical application of principles through work on a dance production.

Detailed Description of Content of Course
1. Staging the dance
a. Principles and purposes of staging the production
b. Planning, rehearsing, and executing the program
(1) Preparing a budget
(2) Organizing a rehearsal schedule including
(a) Studio rehearsals for choreographers, dancers, and musicians
(b) Stage rehearsals for technical run-throughs, costumes, and full
dress rehearsals
(3) Planning a production schedule that incorporates the assistance of
(a) Technical director
(b) Set designer
(c) Costume designer
(d) Lighting designer
(e) Stage manager and assistant stage manager
(f) House Manager
(4) Mounting an advertising campaign
(5) Evaluating the production process once the production is completed

a. Introduction to the purposes of costumes
b. Basic considerations for group costumes
c. Elements of costume design

3. Stage make-up for dance
a. Introduction to the purposes of make-up

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
The format of the course will be a blend of theory and practice using lectures, class discussions, and laboratories in which the student applies knowledge presented in lecture; for example, the building of costumes, the writing of press releases, the formulation of a week's rehearsal schedule, the making-up of a performer.
Goals and Objectives of the Course
At the conclusion of the course, the student will:
1. Devise a weekly rehearsal schedule.
2. Demonstrate a working knowledge of the vocabulary of technical theatre.
3. Design a set of dance costumes.
4. Write press releases.
5. Design a program for a dance concert.
6. Apply stage make-up on another dancer.
7. Prepare a budget for a hypothetical dance production.
Assessment Measures
The student may be evaluated by a variety of measures including projects based upon the theoretical materials of the course, written and oral exams, class discussion, practical execution of technical aspects of a production (e.g., building costumes, constructing set pieces, acting as stage manager), and class attendance.
