COED 643: Practicum in Professional School Counseling

Prerequisites: COED 611, COED 612, and COED 617 and approval of chairperson one semester prior to registration. COED 611 requires a grade of “B” or higher.

Credit Hours: (3)

A minimum 100-hour field placement in an appropriate P-12 school setting providing at least 40 direct counseling hours in individual and group counseling to students under the supervision of an experienced counselor. Emphasis will be placed on the social/emotional, academic, and career concerns of P-12 students. Requires completed placement application and approval of program coordinator. Liability insurance required.

 

Detailed Description of Content of Course

  1. CACREP Requirements: Complete supervised practicum experiences that total a minimum of 100 clock hours. The practicum provides for the development of counseling skills under supervision, including the following: 
    1. 40 hours of direct service with clients, including experience in individual counseling and group counseling. 
    2. Weekly interaction with an average of one (1) hour per week of individual and/or triadic supervision which occurs regularly over a minimum of one academic term by a program faculty member or a supervisor working under the supervision of a program faculty member. 
    3. An average of one and one half (1 ½) hours per week of group supervision that is provided on a regular schedule over the course of the student’s practicum by a program faculty member or a supervisor under the supervision of a program faculty member. 
    4. Evaluation of the student’s performance throughout the practicum including a formal evaluation after the student completes the practicum. 
  2. Understanding Legal/Ethical Requirements: All students are STRONGLY encouraged to belong to their appropriate professional organization (i.e., American Counseling Association, American School Counselors Association) and obtain liability insurance available through them.  
  3. Completing all Documents: Each student will complete evaluations of the site, faculty, clinical supervisor and self to be turned in the last group supervision session. Each student must maintain accurate records of direct and indirect contact hours. 
  4. Documentation/Hours Log: Keep a log of your hours (See the practicum manual) and turn in at the end of the semester. 
  5. Attendance and Participation: Given the interactive nature of this course, attendance and participation are necessary to develop knowledge and skills as a developing professional school counselor. Additionally, each student brings with them to class a wealth of ideas based on her/his life experiences. Thus, your participation is valued and honored as part of this learning experience.
