COED 641: Practicum: Individual Counseling Techniques
Prerequisites: COED 611 with a grade of “B” or higher and faculty approval.
Pre- or Corequisites: COED 610 and COED 612 can be taken concurrently with COED 641, but if taken prior to COED 641 must have a grade of “B” or higher.
Credit Hours: (3) One hour lecture; four hours laboratory
This course integrates varying theoretical approaches to counseling through clinical practice. It also requires progressive clinical proficiency in the assessment, diagnosis, planning, and execution of counseling, while demonstrating effectiveness in the use of the behavioral sciences and theory, tools, and techniques of counseling and psychotherapy.
Detailed Description of Content of Course
This course is designed to develop students' personal style of counseling. The emphasis is on integrating counseling theory and techniques into a personal counseling style for each student. Direct experience with actual clients is required. This requirement includes:
1. Client interviews
2. Completion of interview critique and report forms for all counseling sessions
3. One or more videotaped interviews per week
4. Referrals and self-referrals
5. Counseling with a variety of age individuals and clients
6. Test interpretation sessions when appropriate
7. Consultation sessions with teachers, administrators, agency workers, and other
appropriate personnel.

Goals and Objectives of the Course
Goals:
1. To provide a supervised practical experience in counseling appropriate to a graduate
student's career goals.
2. To provide the opportunity for the graduate student to demonstrate the ability
to put into practice cognitive and affective learning gained in the professional program
of the counselor preparation.
Objectives:
1. To develop students abilities to function effectively in the counseling relationship
with clients.
2. To develop students abilities to facilitate client change.
3. To develop students abilities to articulate a coherent, meaningful philosophical
and theoretical base consistent with counseling performance.
