COSD 608: Motor Speech Disorders
Prerequisite: Graduate standing or permission
Credit Hours: (3)
Study of neuropathology in relation to apraxia and dysarthria, including symptomatology, differential diagnosis, and appropriate management techniques.
Detailed Description of Content of Course
Course covers:
1. An in-depth coverage of neuroanatomy (central nervous system and peripheral nervous
system;
2. Neuromotor pathways related to speech, with related symptoms.
3. Assessment/treatment of apraxia of speech and the dysarthrias.
4. Clinical motor speech disorder review.
5. Dysphagia assessment and treatment.
Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
Course material will be presented through lecture, assigned readings, and class handouts relative to certain topics. The class will be further augmented through audio and video presentations and guest lectures/field trips. In addition, each student will make a presentation of a selected topic.
Goals and Objectives of the Course
1. To correlate neuroanatomical and neurophysiological components with speech and
language.
2. To differentiate apraxia of speech and the dysarthrias.
3. To assess the speech mechanism and to relate the findings to the processes of speech
(respiration, phonation, resonance, articulation, and prosody)
4. To select appropriate treatment procedures as dictated by neuroanatomical and neurophysiological
symptomatology.
