Introduction to the study of the physics of sound, anatomy and physiology of the auditory system, and psychoacoustics.
Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
The major purpose of this course is to acquaint students with the scientific and physical nature of sound. Lectures provide facts and theory on acoustics, auditory and speech perception. The demonstrations provide experience with applied technology as it relates to the hearing sciences.
The following topics are covered in the course:
1. Acoustics
2. Anatomy of the auditory system
3. Physiology of the auditory system
4. Basic Electrical Components of Hearing Aid Circuitry and Safety
5. Psychoacoustics
Goals and Objectives of the Course
The goals and objectives for the course are for students:
1. to define basic acoustical concepts
2. to demonstrate an understanding of anatomy of the auditory system
3. to demonstrate an understanding of physiology of the auditory system
4. to describe basic psychoacoustics
5. to define basic electrical components of hearing aid circuitry and electrical safety
procedures
Assessment Measures
Student performance may be assessed on a variety of tasks, including traditional essay and objective examinations that cover readings and lecture material, course projects, and class demonstrations.
