I. Course Title: Media Production Portfolio

II. Course Number: COMS 482

III. Credit Hours: 3 credits 

IV. Prerequisites: COMS 130 (with a grade of “C” or better), COMS 146 (C- or better), COMS 246, COMS 247, COMS 346, and COMS 347 ; or permission of instructor.

V. Course Description: 

Provides specific, directed activity for completion and evaluation of advanced video projects and materials for prospective employment. The course culminates in the production of a portfolio that showcases the student’s technical and aesthetic skills..

Note(s): Applied Learning designated course.  May be repeated, with permission of instructor, but no more than 9 hours of COMS 482 may be taken for credit.

VI. Detailed Description of Content of the Course:

Students apply theories and techniques learned in prerequisite courses to produce portfolios that highlight the student’s media production knowledge, skills, and abilities. Through work on advanced projects and preparation of materials for prospective employment, students build portfolios to aid in the pursuit of employment in a media production related field. Students will be expected to plan and execute their projects on an independent basis.

VI. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course:

This course will consist of lectures, individual meetings, critiques and advanced projects designed to showcase the production skills necessary to secure employment in media production related fields. Students will work to create advanced projects and a portfolio through which to present their work to potential employers.

VII. Goals and Objectives of the Course:

Students will be able to:

  1. Compile and publish a successful portfolio along with application materials to support the pursuit for employment in a media production-related field.
  2. Identify the standards necessary for entry into the media production industry and complete projects that meet those standards.   
  3. Identify the skills needed for employment in various fields of media production and develop projects that showcase those skills
  4. Integrate skills learned in previous coursework to work through advanced projects from idea conception to finished product.  

VIII. Assessment Measures:

  1. Advanced production projects applying skills gained throughout previous courses.
  2. Materials to aid in pursuit of employment in media production related field (resumes, cover letters, certifications, etc.).
  3. Portfolio presentation of work that showcases advanced production skills.
