Media and Society provides for the investigation of the impact of mass media on society; discussion of theoretical concepts, political, legal, economic, and social issues related to the production, distribution, and promotion of media is provided for in the course.
Detailed Description of Course
This course examines how mass media effect society and society’s effect on the media;
and how political and social forces affect the content of the media. While emphasis
is placed on commercial and non-commercial media in the United States, comparative
media organizations and cultures are examined. All major media types are examined
as are related industries such as advertising and public relations.
Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
The course will be a combination of lecture, debate/discussion, and individual or
group research. Significant exposure to reading, research articles, and mass media
programs will take place.
Goals and Objectives of the Course
After completing this course, students will be able to:
1) Understand and apply the principles and laws of freedom of speech and press
and understand the range of systems of
freedom of expression around the world, including the right to dissent, to
monitor and criticize power, and to
assemble and petition for redress of grievances.
2) Demonstrate an understanding of the history and role of professionals and institutions
in shaping communications.
3) Demonstrate an understanding of gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation
and, as appropriate, other forms of diversity
in domestic society in relation to mass communications.
4) Demonstrate an understanding of the diversity of peoples and cultures and of
the significance and impact of mass
communications in a global society.
5) Understand concepts and apply theories in the use and presentation of images
and information.
6) Demonstrate an understanding of professional ethical principles and work ethically
in pursuit of truth, accuracy,
fairness, and diversity.
Assessment Measures
1) Examinations will be given on course material coming from textbook readings,
class presentations, guest lectures, and
material taken from current mass media outlets.
2) Written assignments on media concept.
3) Participation in class discussions.
