COMS 246: Media Production 2A: Audio

Provides instruction in the fundamental theories, concepts, and practical techniques
of audio production, including studio and field recording for a variety of media,
which may include radio, online streaming platforms, and film. Students will also
continue to build on their filming and editing skills. Ultimately, this course focuses
on knowledge, skills, and work ethic required in upper-level classes.
Detailed Description of Course Content
This course provides instruction in the fundamental theories, concepts, and practical
techniques of audio production, including studio and field recording for a variety
of media, which may include radio, online streaming platforms, and film. Students
will also continue to build on their filming and editing skills. Ultimately, this
course focuses on knowledge, skills, and work ethic required in upper-level classes.
Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
This course will consist of lectures, discussions, demonstrations, and critiques.
Students may be asked to read material from a required textbook, watch videos, and/or
read articles or selections from books. Students will also work on analyses and projects
in and out of class.
Student Learning Outcomes
Students will be able to:
1) Analyze an audio production’s audience, goals/objectives, and style/tone;
2) Identify key issues relating to studio design, including acoustics;
3) Identify and describe key attributes of analog and digital sound;
4) Identify, describe, and use various pieces of equipment and software related to audio production;
5) Evaluate the needs of clients;
6) Create effective and high-quality audio and audio-visual productions for various media;
7) Identify and analyze key concepts in the use of sound in diverse media.
Assessment Measures
1) Exams/quizzes covering course content.
2) Assignments/projects in which students demonstrate a working knowledge of concepts and processes.
3) Written assignments demonstrating the ability to analyze and apply course material in a clear manner.
