CVPA 450: STEAM: Arts+ STEM Integration and Expression

This course explores artistic expression through creativity, imagination, and inquiry by connecting the arts to STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) concepts with an emphasis on experiential learning and the creative process.
Course Content
Official Course Description
STEAM: Arts+ STEM Integration and Expression explores artistic expression through creativity, imagination, and inquiry by connecting the arts to STEM (science, technology, engineering, and) mathematics) concepts with an emphasis on experiential learning to guide connection, dialog, collaboration, critical thinking, creative problem-solving, innovation, and evaluation. This course culminates in an artistic expression STEAM project utilizing the creative, process.
Major Topics:
1. Visual and performing arts shown in combination with and/ or in the context of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) topics
a. Identification and analysis of the visual Arts and performing arts STEM
i. Reciprocal relationship between the Arts and STEM
ii. Comparison of the Arts and STEM
b. STEM topics as an art form. At minimum addressing examples from the natural and formal sciences:
i. Natural sciences (e. g., biology, chemistry, and physics), which study the physical world.
ii. Formal sciences (e. g., logic, geometrics, mathematics, and theoretical computer science), which study formal systems, governed by axioms and rules.
2. STEAM (Arts+ STEM)
a. Inquiry: a STEAM approach to guide inquiry, curiosity, exploration, observation, and investigation
b. Expression: a STEAM approach to inform inspiration, experience, interpretation, and reflection
c. Creative Problem-solving: a STEAM approach in process to promote ideation, imagination, innovation, critical thinking, implementation, and evaluation
d. Dialog: a STEAM approach to encourage collaboration, discussion, communication, and connection
e. Application: a STEAM collaborative endeavor
3. STEAM educational learning models
a. Arts integration in STEM learning Art integration
b. Arts significance in STEM learning
4. Visual and Performing Arts creative and/ or artistic expression with STEM concepts
a. Paradigms: examples and models of historic to current-day visual and performing artists’ and designers’ work integrating STEM concepts
b. Modality: identifying STEM instruments utilized through visual and performing arts (i. e. golden ratio, scale and proportion, perspective, planar symmetries, rhythm, polyhedral, fractal dimensions, geometry, measurement, biomimicry, biophilia, photomicrography, spectrum, laws of physics, dynamics, thermodynamics, aerodynamics, etc.)
c. Creation of STEM inspired Visual and Performing Arts deliverables
d. Presentation of STEM inspired Visual and Performing Arts deliverables
5. Apply the creative process to result in forms of creative expression:
a. Inspiration: i. e., themes, processes, experience, guiding questions, challenge, problem, hypothesis (With in the framework of a STEAM concept)
b. Conceptualizing: i. e., ideation, critical thinking, research, outline, mind mapping, plan, prototype, model, experiment.
c. Creation: i. e., produce work, reflect, evaluate, revise
d. Culmination: i. e., implement, present, critique (self, peer, instructor/ mentor), evaluate, discuss, respond, reflect, revise, share (display/ perform/ disseminate)
Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. analyze visual and performing arts in combination with and/ or in the context of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) topics
2. identify models of Historic to current-day Visual and Performing Artists’ and Designers’ work integrating STEM concepts
3. examine STEAM educational learning models to corelate the benefits of Arts+ STEM (STEAM) integration
4. produce an Arts+ STEM collaboration endeavor
5. critically evaluate projects; and
6. create forms of creative artistic expression, using the creative process, inspired by STEM topics.
E (Humanistic or Artistic Expression) Area
Learning Goal: To explore humanistic or artistic expression through inquiry or creativity. Learning Outcomes:
1. Students demonstrate understanding of diverse ideas, languages, products, or processes of humanistic inquiry or artistic expression.
2. Students critically evaluate, synthesize, or create forms of human expression or inquiry.
Assessment Measures
Grading procedures will be determined by the individual faculty member teaching the course but include the following:
1. minimum of four activity assignments addressing each of the following:
a. identify and analyze visual and performing arts in combination with and/ or in the context of STEM topics
b. identify Historic to current-day Visual and Performing Artists’ and Designers’ work integrating STEM concepts
c. examine STEAM educational learning models
d. corelate the benefits of Arts+ STEM (STEAM) integration
2. minimum of one Cooperative project
3. minimum of one creative and/ or artistic expression STEAM endeavor project, using the creative process, including process work. Projects could include but is are not limited to creating: 2-D/ 3-D visual art and design, an immersive art experience, exhibits, interactive art, installation art, displays, a directed activity, performances, choreography, musical composition, theatrical scenery in physical, digital, conceptual, and/ or virtual reality formats
4. minimum of one project in-process and one final critique evaluation from each: peer, self, and instructor/ mentor
