CSAT 190: Science and Technology Internship
Prerequisites: Minimum 2.0 GPA and designation as a CSAT major. Appropriate placement
must be arranged by the student with assistance and support of Career Services and
other appropriate resources. Student must complete the Radford University Internship
Agreement.

An internship experience enables students to explore career interests and develop valuable soft skills while applying knowledge and skills learned in the classroom within a professional work setting. Through direct participation, reflection, and evaluation, students relate their experience to their academic study, identify what they still need to learn, and gain a broader understanding of their chosen field while building professional networks. Students will work with the faculty to set learning goals at the beginning of the semester. Students produce a critical reflection on their internship experience demonstrating how they have achieved specific learning outcomes. This course may be taken for credit more than once.
Detailed Description of Course
Students work for an organization, typically with a company, non-profit, government agency, or a community-based organization to directly observe a professional work setting. Students should participate in a role related to their academic studies and chosen career path. Students write a weekly essay reflecting on their experience and they produce a final reflective paper summarizing what has been learned and how they have achieved specific learning outcomes. Students evaluate their employer and receive a performance evaluation from their employer. A grade of Pass of Fail will be assigned for this course.
Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
Students in CSAT 190 will find and secure an internship with a company, non-proft, government agency, or a community-based organization.
Goals and Objectives of the Course
Having successfully completed the Science and Technology Internship, students will relate their experience to their academic study, identify what they still need to learn, gain a broader understanding of their chosen field, identify specific roles and career opportunities in their chosen field, and build professional networks.
Assessment Measures
Students will be evaluated on their weekly reflection essay, their final reflective paper summarizing what has been learned and how they have achieved specific learning outcomes, their evaluation of their employer, and a performance evaluation from their employer.
