Parasitology
Three hours lecture, three hours laboratory
Prerequisite: A grade of "C" or better in BIOL 131, BIOL 132, BIOL 231, and BIOL 232;
or a grade of "C" or better in BIOL 111, BIOL 112, BIOL 222 and BIOL 230.
Study of the anatomy, systematics, ecology, and life cycles of the major parasitic
groups.
Note(s): Scientific and Quantitative Reasoning designated course.
Detailed Description of Content of Course
Through the lecture and laboratory sessions of the course, students will explore the
science of parasitology by studying the most common parasite taxa: protozoans, helminths,
and arthropods. Lectures will cover basic terminology, epidemiological theory and
models, basic laboratory techniques, and the major parasite taxa. In the laboratory
portion of the course, students perform detailed microscopic examinations of parasite
morphology.
Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
Course content will may be presented and examined through lectures, interactive discussions,
writing exercises, critical thinking exercises and integrated laboratory experiments.
