ATTR 345: General Medical Rotation (Athletic Training)
Prerequisites: ATTR 250, ATTR 323, and cumulative 2.75 GPA
Corequisites: ATTR 340
Credit Hours: (1)
Laboratory and clinical experiences designed to provide students with formal instruction
and evaluation in the entry level athletic training clinical proficiencies. This course
requires the completion of 50 hours of clinical experience performed under the supervision
of an approved medical professional at a program approved site.
Note(s): Students cannot receive credit for both ESHE 345 and ATTR 345.
Detailed Description of Content of Course
This course is designed to allow the future certified athletic trainer a chance to develop their cognitive, psychomotor and affective skills while interacting in a medical environment, with a concentration in the psychomotor domain areas in illness assessment and medical documentation.
Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
Students will meet at the beginning of the semester to be briefed on the conduct required while in the approved medical facility and to be advised of the clinical competencies that must be mastered in the course. Students will be required to work with a physician to participate in the assessment of illnesses and to perform appropriate medical documentation. At the same time, students will be developing their psychomotor domain skills in illness assessment and medical documentation. Students will only be allowed to perform tasks for which competency has been established in oral examinations with the physician or members of his/her staff or the ATEP program director.
Goals and Objectives of the Course
1. Give an epinephrine injection to prevent anaphylaxis as per a physician.
2. Instruct a patient in the correct way to use an asthmatic inhaler.
3. Assess a patient for congenital or acquired abnormalities that would predispose
them to injury.
4. Uses a stethoscope to assess heart, lung and bowel sounds.
5. Assess vital signs including body temperature.
6. Use a penlight to check pupil reaction.
7. Use an otoscope to examine the ear and nasal passages.
8. Use and interpret urine diagnostic chemstrips.
9. Accept the role of medical professionals in referral, management and treatment
of individuals suffering from general medical conditions.
